Feeling adventurous a few weeks back I spent the weekend learning how to survive in the wild. Yes, survive in the wild! When I told a friend their response was, “I can tell you that…don’t go there!” But off I went, and I was so glad I did.
The drive through the Cairngorms National Park, amongst the vast forestry and rolling hills was enchanting. I met with our guide’s Neil and Buzz, who was so welcoming and made me feel right at home….in my tent with the best view in the house overlooking the beautiful landscape. My home for the next two days was literally the forest!
I met my teammates and we set off, a little apprehensive but excited by the unknown. We learnt about what you can and can’t eat in the wild, it’s amazing how mother nature gives us everything we need. There’s so much richness in the forest, but many of us are so detached from our roots in nature.
For me, it’s so important to immerse in nature, it’s deeply healing and grounding, as beings of frequency mother nature resets our bio-rhythm to that of the earth, it increases serotonin levels – the hormone of happiness!
I was challenged at every step of the way, from building a shelter to sleep in, out of branches and moss, to learning how to make fire from scratch. It struck me how all of this reminded me of my meditation practice. The resistance that often comes up, the limiting beliefs, the duality of the positive and negative mind. But what really helped me through was the support of a teacher. Neil’s guidance and patience created a safe space for me to work through the drama, the feelings of not feeling good enough and being totally out of my comfort zone, the strength to persist when my ego was yelling at me to give up….
Until there it was, sparks….then flames! I can’t describe the exhilarating feeling of making fire and developing the ability to nurture those flames into something powerful and divine. Just like we develop our consciousness in Kundalini Yoga. It starts off small, but as long as we nurture it well with devotion and regular practice, the veil of illusion dissolves and our consciousness expands.
If you’re interested in learning to survive in the wild and having your own wilderness adventure I would totally recommend Backcountry Survival. Their knowledge, skills, and patience 🙂 was excellent.
